Ever wondered how grapes become wine? Join the City Winery winemaking team for an in-depth look at the science of winemaking from grape to glass. Participate in decisions made in the vineyard and the cellar as we craft an Atlanta Science Festival-exclusive barrel of wine. Participate in harvest, crush, blending and bottling. The classes are available a la carte or as a four-class subscription for a discounted price. Subscribers will receive their own bottle of custom labeled wine. June 23 – Vines to Wines CANCELLED
Join us as we travel to Kaya Vineyards in Dahlonega, GA to learn about the building blocks of great wine: great grapes! We’ll discuss the grapevine, vitis vinifera, and learn about what makes this plant such a specialized and adaptive vine. We’ll view the vineyard and learn about commercial grape growing, then taste wines made from those grapes. Finally, we’ll take a look at the block of grapes that we’ll be harvesting for our class.
This 6-hour day trip (10am-4pm) is included with the Series Subscription or $125 a la carte, and includes:

October 6 – The science of fermentation
It’s harvest season in the winery! Come join us as we discuss how this 6-week period determines the course of a wine’s life. Participate in punchdowns or pumpovers, see how grapes are processed into wine, and learn all about fermentation and the amazing organism that is yeast. We’ll check in on our wine as it progresses through fermentation.

February 1 – Wine Blending
Discover the science of tasting and put it to use while building your own blend. Learn how to taste wine from a neurological perspective, the different factors that influence a wine’s taste, and how to build a balanced wine. Put your knowledge to use as you craft a blend of our own Atlanta Science Festival wine.

May 3 – Wine Stability and Packaging
What does it take to ensure that wine makes it safely to the bottle? Join us as we learn about the lab techniques used in analyzing wine chemistry, and how the results dictate our decisions in the cellar. See how the wine is bottled, corked and labeled.
