“Through the Looking Glass: Art + Science” Art Exhibition (March 2- April 30)

March 2

- Free

The Reeves House Visual Arts Center is pleased to present “Through the Looking Glass: Art + Science,” on view from March 2 – April 30, 2023. This exhibition explores the intersection of art and science as seen through the lenses of microscopes and telescopes. By revealing realms invisible to the human eye, these optical devices have dramatically altered the way we view the universe and our place within it. In a visual journey from the smallest units of existence to the vastness of infinite space, viewers are encouraged to rethink the distance that separates us from one another and focus on the connections between us that exist beyond our understanding. Through the intermingling of celestial and earthly imagery, this exhibit unveils the patterns and similarities in the natural world that transcend scale. Work ranges from 3D printed sculptures of viruses to crocheted cells, bacteria grown on Petri dishes and embedded in resin, and a larger than life “Teslascope” that purports to communicate with other planets.

Surprising visual similarities emerge among forms found examined under a microscope or telescope. But, that connection expands beyond just a superficial aesthetic connection:

“The molecules that comprise our body are traceable to the crucibles of the centers of stars. These atoms and molecules are in us because, in fact, the universe is in us. And, we are not only figuratively, but literally, stardust.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson
