The Milpa and The Monarch

November 15, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Webinar Title: The Milpa and The Monarch: Indigenous cosmologies of Mexico.

Speaker: Dr. Columba Gonzalez, Mount Saint Vincent Univ. with Jesus Arriaga Vazquez and Olivia Vasquez Espinosa.

For Mazahua and Otomis communities, the territory on which the monarch butterfly overwinters is a sacred and fluid space that connects the forest, its waters, and the cornfield. This relationship continues to be produced and reproduced through ritualized practices. This webinar discusses the importance of forest-centred cosmologies in protecting the monarch butterfly’s winter home. Dr. Gonzalez-Duarte will be in conversation with Otomi community members Jesus Arriaga Vazquez and Olivia Vazquez Espinosa. Bi-directional English-Spanish and Spanish-English translation will be provided.

Webinars are first come, first served, with a capacity of 500 attendees.
