Lunch and Learn: How to Plant 7.5 Million Trees

August 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Atlanta is home to Alliance for International Reforestation (AIR), an international reforestation organization that has planted more than 7.5 MILLION trees and is in the top 1% of environmental agencies worldwide. In this Lunch and Learn you will learn about AIR’s historic efforts to re-green areas affected by deforestation in various regions of the world. Dr. Anne Hallum, founding president has lead AIR for over 25 years. Dr. Hallum shares her insights for planting and protecting trees both at home and abroad.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Anne Hallum is Professor of Political Science Emerita and Founding President of the Alliance for International Reforestation (“AIR”). Anne visited Guatemala for the first time in 1991 during a student trip with Stetson University. She witnessed the massive deforestation and saw its connection with hunger, poverty and mudslides. She felt called to return to Guatemala to begin a community-based program with Mayan leadership that would tackle hunger, rural education needs, and environmental devastation in Maya communities. All of AIR’s full-time staff are Guatemalan natives. AIR now has projects in 250 communities, reaching over 5,000 families with improved crops and many micro-businesses. In 2017, AIR was one of the winners of the prestigious Equator Prize for Sustainable Development from the United Nations in New York City. AIR was also honored with the “Momentum for Change” Award from the UN Climate Change Conference in Poland, as well as numerous national awards in Guatemala.
