In this introductory art and science combo class, we’ll be talking about one of the most universal art tools- the pencil. Across all artistic disciplines, a pencil typically gets used in some part of the process. We’ll discuss the materials that make up these familiar instruments, and introduce students to a variety of different types.
After learning about our tools, students will be introduced to scientific illustration- What is it, who uses it, and why.
Following discussion, students will then get to experiment and practice with various types of artist pencils as we also work through the difference between a sketch and a detailed observational drawing. The center has lots of specimens and animals to practice drawing, so after class time students are welcome to find a cozy spot and a favorite critter to draw, or check out the remainder of the center and visit with the resident animals.
